Originally founded in 1798 by Obed Denham as Denham Town, what would become Bethel was in what was then the Northwest Territory. Later that same year, it was named Plainfield then platted under it. It wasn’t until 1802 that it was replatted under the name Bethel. It is named for Bethal, a city in the Hebrew Bible. A post office has been in operation in the village since 1815.
